from 6-8 p.m.

in the HMS Library Media Center

~
When Clay Jenson plays the casette tapes he received in a mysterious package, he's surprised to hear the voice of dead classmate Hannah Baker. He's one of 13 people who receive Hannah's story, which details the circumstances that led to her suicide. Clay spends the rest of the day and long into the night listening to Hannah's voice and going to the locations she wants him to visit. The text alternates, sometimes quickly, between Hannah's voice (italicized) and Clay's thoughts as he listens to her words, which illuminate betrayals and secrets that demonstrate the consequences of even small actions. The message about how we treat one another, although sometimes heavy, makes for compelling reading.

Name Our Club Contest...

While "HMS Book Club" is indeed a powerful title that took months to come up with (cough, cough), many of you have suggested that we come up with a name that shows more ownership and expresses our individuality as a book club. So with that said, the contest for naming our book club has officially begun. Please post your ideas for book club names under this entry, and at our next book club meeting, we will vote on our new name! The winning entry will receive a gift certificate to "The Book Basket" in Wetumpka. Good luck and thanks!

Preview of "TH1RTEEN R3ASONS WHY" by Jay Asher

Students gathered this morning for breakfast and a preview reading of Jay Asher's debut novel, TH1RTEEN R3ASONS WHY. We had a great turnout with over 25 students rolling in sleepy-eyed at 7am to purchase limited copies of the novel that the author will be signing for them! The books were SOLD OUT within the first 10 minutes, with 10 more paid orders. During the read-aloud, you could have heard a pin drop as students listened to Hannah Baker, a voice from the grave, begin to explain the events leading up to her death.

The novel will be discussed at the December 4th Book Club Meeting to be held in the HMS Media Center.

Twilight~Only a vampire can love you forever...

Hey everyone!
I had such a fabulous time with you all at the "Twilight Character Dinner" discussing Twilight by Stephenie Meyers. The conversation was great and you guys did a fabulous job with interjecting your thoughts, ideas, comments, and favorite moments from the novel. I will admit however, it was so hard for me not to "leak out" spoilers for New Moon! I am ready to get into the great debate of who Bella should be with..."Edward or Jacob"?!
I was also glad to see everyone excited about the November pick, TH1RTEEN R3ASONS Why by Jay Asher. Hope to see you at the next meeting!

Check out a few pics from our fun night!
